Carbon Deposits on 2002 Avalanche
From: Marcus
Subject: Tapping
Bobby,
I have a 2002 Avalanche with a 5.3L V8. Recently I have noticed when I first start the engine in the morning I hear what seems like a lifter tapping for a few minutes. After the oil circulates it seem fine. I use 5W-30 oil. Do you have any thoughts on this?
Thank you!

Marcus,
My thoughts are that your engine has carbon deposits causing piston noise. I suggest a complete BG Induction Service – if you’ve not done so in the past 30K miles. Take a look at my 10 Most Wanted Car Killers – great info - easy to view.
Also, look closely for intake manifold leakage, which has brought many GM engines to our shop over the past several years. “Red” coolant can be replaced with green (believe me on this). I’ve also had too many GMs with bad heater cores.
Stay Tuned.
Best,
Bobby Likis
