S-10 Coolant Flush

Subject: Coolant Quandary
Hi, Bobby,
I have a S-10 ZR2 and want to flush my coolant system with Permatex 18E. Will that work with the Dex-Cool in the system? I have also heard of people flushing and switching from Dex-Cool. Your thoughts would be much appreciated!

Great question Todd,
I have a concern that you add any cleaner without having some idea of its content. I am not familiar with the chemicals used in the cleaner product you mentioned.
You have a couple of options:
- Rather than add some chemical that could possibly “etch” the normally smooth interior surfaces of a cooling system, you could simply drain existing coolant (you must take the old coolant to a local collection center as it’s toxic), refill with water/run-engine-to-temperature/drain /refill with water/run-to-temperature/repeat… repeat… until all coolant is gone/drain and finally refill with 50/50 Green coolant and water. It’s important that you understand the thermostat will not allow proper flushing because it sees a colder engine therefore you cannot completely flush an engine in a short period of time nor can you do it thoroughly.
- Or let a local BG shop do the complete job using their chemistry and machinery. Remember, BG machines do not allow air intrusion, which is very important to any cooling system. And BG also adds an additive when the flush is complete, which increases the new coolant’s lubricity for water pump seal protection and increased life. This specially formulated additive also includes a specific stop-leak that seals tiny micro-pores. All engines/cylinder heads/gasket areas and mating surfaces have porous openings (pits) that must be resealed after any flush.
Go to 10 Most Wanted Car Killers for additional info and click here to locate a convenient BG center near you.

Hello Bobby and thanks so much for the reply. Will do! With that being said, would you suggest switching to the green or staying with the red after a BG flush?

Green coolant is in my Viper. Green’s basically the same as red, except it does not include long-lasting additives –which, by the way, have not been proven to extend coolant life. In fact, the opposite may be true. Perhaps in a perfect world, red might be better, but for my nickel, BG flush green coolant every 30K miles or 24 months and you won’t have problems
