Black Oil

From: Eddie
Subject: Black Oil

Bobby,

I spoke with you a couple weeks ago on Car Clinic regarding the black oil that comes out of my Dodge right after an oil change. The truck is a 2007 Dodge 4x4 quad cab with only 6000 miles on it. My concern is when I change the oil it turns black as soon as I start the engine. I think you suggested that I look into BG 109 as an additive to the next oil change. My truck takes 12 quarts of oil. When I'm ready to change my oil in the Dodge truck, please detail for me as to what I should buy and do for this. Once the process you requested is done, should the oil be clean even after it runs, or will it still run black for a while? I’d really like to have clean oil after a change. I simply don't understand why it would come out black in a truck with only 6,000 miles.

Thank you!

Eddie,

BG 109 is not an additive, but a cleaning compound.  You should use it to “purge” the crankcase prior to draining old oil as follows…

Add a can of 109 to old oil with engine at operating temperature and run 10 minutes to clean and dissolve deposits. Then drain all. Install new oil and filter and add BG MOA® – which is an additive that enhances oil’s life and better protects your engine. MOA will also help keep an engine cleaner over the long haul. You must remember that all Diesel engines produce somewhat darker oil due to extreme compression and fuel dilution, so it’s normal for a diesel to look dirtier than a gas engine.

I suggest you use the BG 109 for this first oil change and monitor the oil over the next few thousand miles. You do not need to add BG’s cleaner to every change interval… perhaps once every 30K miles.

Take a look at my 10 Most Wanted Car Killers and you’ll see what additional services you should do to maintain your truck.

Best regards,
Bobby Likis
