Lawn Mower Oil Change
From: Joe
Subject: Lawn Mower Engine
Hello Bobby,
Do you know if those oil additives to increase power and reduce smoke work on small lawn mower engines? I have a 20 hp Briggs twin – only 7 years old – and neither parts nor engine replacements are available. (Can you say planned obsolescence?)
Thanks,
Joe

Joe,
This is what I’d do if the mower were mine. Up front, let me say this may not work because of mower properties, but it’s worth a try.
I recommend adding BG 109 (measure what you use as this bottle is formulated for 5-quart system) to the mower's existing old oil and run for 15 minutes. Then drain all and replace with new oil.
Run again for 10 minutes and drain.
Install another (final) batch of new oil.
This chemical will dissolve the deposits that hold carbon and generally cause rings to stick. There are oils made for engines that burn oil - most are formulated with a higher "flash" point, which helps reduce smoke - still doesn't help correct what's causing the smoke.
If the above procedure doesn't help, it's time for another engine… or I guess in your case, another mower.
Go to www.bgfindashop.com to locate a shop (new car dealer or independent) near you that uses BG products. Tell them I sent you and that you understand this may not work.
Let me know how it goes!
