Low cost of ownership is a hot selling point among vehicle manufacturers (OEM). OEMs tout “low maintenance costs” or “maintenance free” vehicles because all of the other attributes that comprise low cost of ownership (depreciation, fuel costs, insurance, state fees and financing) are difficult to control and manipulate. Whichever promises the cheapest vehicle maintenance wins!
To support promises of superior, maintenance-free vehicles, OEMs are lengthening oil change intervals, calling for 10,000 miles (16,000 km)—some as high as 15,000 miles (24,000 km)—of road wear between shop visits. These extended intervals are quickly becoming the norm in owner’s manuals.
To support extended oil change intervals, today’s high quality, full synthetic oils are more robust and have a greater ability to protect engines from wear and heat… yet still deliver good fuel economy with low emissions.
However, new technology engines like gasoline direct injection (GDI), have hotter combustion temperatures, higher cylinder pressures, less ring tension and tighter tolerances than we have ever seen! This harsh environment is the perfect storm for deposit formation and buildup at even 5,000-mile (8,000-km) intervals. Add several thousand more miles to oil change intervals and these engines provide a lengthy incubation period for carbon deposits.
Even high quality, full synthetic oils will degrade eventually. Unless the oil is strengthened to protect against high heat for longer periods of time, deposits will form, build, and cause expensive damage on many engine components.
